Everything you need to know about tridents in The Java Update.
1: The success rate of the drowned with tridents killing players is so high that comparatively the success rate of other hostile mobs is less then 1%. And not even because the success rate of other hostile mobs is low, no, not for that reason at all.
2: Drowned can only drop tridents if they are holding one, and if they drop it its durability is usually at 2% so you will have to get several tridents and grinding stone them.
3: Drowned have a 0.10% chance of dropping a trident.
4: If you encounter multiple drowned with tridents and you only have diamond armor or less, don't bother fighting them. Your only hope is to swim in zig zags and make a hasty retreat while screaming like a little girl, and carrying multiple ox eye daisy stews to get your health back.
5: WHEN, not if, take that if and send it to a american Filipino stile concentration camp and don't even think of letting it out, WHEN a drowned with a trident kills you I hope you weren't carrying anything important. The items you have lost will be scattered especially if there are dolphins in the area, they will be throwing spears at you while you try to get something to fight back with and don't even think about bringing additional items to try to get your items back, you will only lose them too, and if you want to keep trying you better plant a bed near by. Your best hope is that your armor ends up on a magma block and they go get boiled trying to get it.
6: Ok so you are sure you wish to hunt them for their tridents? THE apex predator of minecraft? Well then here is what you do. Get a bow with at least power III and the best armor you can. The best place to find drowned with tridents is The Java Sea.
Buy at least five 64 stacks of arrows from a fletcher and just use a lily pad to stay above where they are and rain arrows down at them, and wait for their drops to float us, then, only after you are SURE you killed all the ones with tridents, use a boat for extra speed and distance encase you are wrong.
Do this, and you should have a trident with full durability, in about a week and 5 days.

Im late but.. please do NOT use your trident to destroy end crystals because if the trident falls to the void, it will never come back, even with loyalty enchantment.

Yes the Trident can Return in a Portal Such as Nether and End if return There the Trident will Return. And a Thrown Trident will not burn in Lava. Even in 1.16 update
